Kinds of Irony: a General Theory

Abstract
I offer a theory that unites three kinds of irony: situational, dramatic and verbal. I subsume a forth--romantic irony--under verbal irony. I defend my proposal against the idea that it strays too far from traditional accounts, I consider whether it amounts to conceptual engineering, and I introduce the idea of "representational transparency", a feature of such categories as irony, tragedy and the sublime. I consider examples from Greek drama and conclude with a brief excerpt from Douglas Sirk's film There's always Tomorrow.
The meeting will be held in English.
Participation is strongly recommended to students of the Doctoral School in Philosophy and Human Sciences and to students of the Doctoral School of Mind, Brain, and Reasoning.
