Multimodality: a resource for the study of cooperative work in centers of coordination
November 20, 2019, h. 12:30-14:30.
Room Enzo Paci, Directorate of the Department of Philosophy, Via Festa del Perdono, 7, Milan
The seminar deals with multimodality not only as a resource for practitioners performing and learning to perform their cooperative work but also for the fieldworker doing ethnographic research. By presenting some Workplace Studies I carried out in Call Centers, I will show how the use of multimodal resources – language, prosody, gesture, sounds, gaze, body postures and movements, manipulation of technologies/artifacts – makes the actions of participants publicly accessible and mutually intelligible so that these performances ensure the situated accomplishment of cooperative work. By adopting a reflexive stance, I will also highlight how multimodal ethnography, with an aesthetic approach, allows to take into account the involvement of the senses of fieldworker as a resource to notice these relevant multimodal cues through which the accountability of teamwork-in-action is contextually produced.
